Dry Eye Specialty Clinic and Lumenis IPL

Dry eye is a chronic disease related to increasing age and is more common in females. Patients with dry eye report a significant, negative effect on their quality of life and often traditional treatments alone are insufficient to provide substantial relief.

Symptoms of dry eye can include a burning sensation, scratchy eyes, blurred vision, sensitivity to light and, watery eyes.

IPL is a non-invasive and relatively comfortable treatment. It works by stimulating and unblocking the Meibomian glands in your lids. Meibomian glands produce the oils that lubricate your eyes.

Stuart Aamodt – clinical optometrist, is Perth Eye Clinic’s IPL and dry eye expert.

Perth Eye Clinic has the only Lumenis IPL machine in WA. It is arguably the gold standard in IPL treatment for dry eyes. Stuart has done hundreds of treatments to date and IPL has been shown to be an effective additional treatment to traditional approaches.

Quite often the underlying cause of dry eyes is blepharitis which affects these glands and prevents them from working efficiently. IPL can be successful in treating blepharitis.

IPL vs Conventional Treatments

Dry eye is multifactorial disease and as such requires a comprehensive work up to find out which treatments will work best for you.

IPL treatment can provide longer lasting relief from dry eye than conventional treatments alone e.g. lubricating drops, hot compresses and lid cleansers.

The procedure only takes 10 to 20 minutes and you can easily go about your day afterwards.

With four treatments initially, and then maintenance treatments every 6 to 12 months, it is a quick and hassle-free procedure.

If you have suffered from chronic dry eye over a long period of time and have not found relief from conventional treatment, then it is worth booking in to see Stuart for an assessment for IPL.
