A Cataract develops when the eyes natural lens becomes cloudy. This very commonly occurs with age however can also occur due to trauma, genetics and some medications.

The common symptoms of Cataracts are

  1. Blurred vision (even with glasses on)
  2. Difficulty driving at night and increasing difficulty with contrast.

The Cataract can also cause a rapid change in glasses with increasing short-sightedness.

Each patient has a choice about lens implants. Our doctors offer a wide range of lenses and will discuss the pros and cons of each choice with you. The new intraocular lens remains in your eye for the rest of your lens.

Intraocular lens (IOL) options

  • Purpose: Provide clear vision at one specific distance (either distance or near).
  • Monovision Option: Involves placing different powered IOLs in each eye; one eye is focused for distance vision, and the other for reading /near vision. This allows for some level of vision correction at both distances but may require some adjustment in depth perception.
  • Purpose: Extend the range of clear vision from distance to intermediate distances, reducing dependence on glasses.
  • Limitation: Reading glasses will still be needed for very close-up tasks or fine print.  The distance vision may not be as crisp as a monofocal IOL.
  • Purpose: Provide a full range of vision from distance to near, minimizing the need for glasses.
  • Benefit: Typically, no glasses are required for most daily activities, including reading and computer work, provided there is excellent light.
  • Limitations: Not all eyes are suitable for a multifocal IOL. A reduction in contrast sensitivity will make vision more difficult in low light levels. Haloes and glare are visual disturbances that are usually transient and worse at night.

What can I expect during surgery?

Cataract surgery is day surgery, and the recovery is generally very quick. Most patients return to driving within a few days.

Your doctor will discuss the risks of surgery with you; however, this is generally low-risk surgery, and most people are thrilled and their vision is brighter and clearer.

Usually, you will receive some sedation during surgery to help you relax and local anaesthetic to the eye so you don’t experience any pain.
