Our practice offers onsite lasers for the treatment of glaucoma and for intraocular lens opacification if required after cataract surgery.
We offer three different types of lasers depending on what your needs are:
Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)
SLT is used to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma. It is safe and painless and can work as well as an eye drop to treat glaucoma. SLT requires minimal recovery time and can work very well. Most patients will experience a 20-30% lowering of their intraocular pressure. It is safe to repeat SLT if the pressure lowering effect wears off after several years.
YAG laser Iridotomy
This is primarily used to treat angle-closure glaucoma or prevent its occurrence by creating a small hole in the peripheral iris. This aims to prevent damage to the optic nerve from glaucoma.
YAG Laser Capsulotomy
This is a procedure used to treat posterior capsule opacification (PCO) which can occur after cataract surgery. PCO occurs in about 10% of patients who have had cataract surgery and causes a gradual reduction in vision due to opacification of the capsule that holds the eyes new intraocular lens. A safe laser can be performed to open the thickened capsule and return the vision to what it was. On the day of the laser numbing drops are used to anaesthetise the eye and a contact lens may be placed on the eye to steady the eye from moving and help to focus the laser. The laser is painless and quick and provides an almost instant improvement in vision.
